General questions about physical therapy and our services

Do I need a doctor's referral to start physical therapy?
In Virginia, you have direct access to physical therapy, which means you can be evaluated and treated by a physical therapist without a physician's referral for up to 30 days. However, some insurance companies may require a referral for coverage. We recommend checking with your insurance provider, and our staff can help verify your benefits before your first visit.
How long does a typical physical therapy session last?
Initial evaluations typically last 60-90 minutes to allow for comprehensive assessment and treatment planning. Follow-up sessions are usually 45-60 minutes. During each session, you'll work one-on-one with your physical therapist, receiving hands-on treatment and guidance through specific exercises tailored to your condition.
What should I wear to my physical therapy appointments?
We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and exposes the area being treated. For example, if you're being treated for a knee injury, bring or wear shorts. For shoulder issues, a tank top or loose t-shirt works well. Athletic shoes with good support are also recommended.
How many physical therapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, severity, and individual goals. Some patients may need just a few sessions, while others with more complex conditions might require several weeks or months of therapy. Your physical therapist will provide an estimated treatment plan during your initial evaluation and adjust it based on your progress.
